The Battle of Brassovia Empty The Battle of Brassovia

The words of the Greek general, Demostheian of Boeotia, regarding the fateful battle - the last stand of the Pecheneg army:

"Our host arrived to the region, the heart of the Pecheneg dominion, in the early morning. The grass beneath our feet was powdered with fine frost, glittering like gems in the rising sun. There we stood; although my army, numbering in the thousands, seemed so many, they were only part of the great masses that would gather in this place for the battle that would decide the history of the region.

The cornered foe took their stand by a fortress, known as "Barasu" in their language, standing tall and proud by the rim of the Carpathian mountains. The Magyars from the north-west struck first, their powerful short bows raining death upon the enemy battlements, followed soon by our own Toxopholites. Soon, a hundred thousand soldiers climbed upon the walls on the Barasu, and endless stream of mail-clad men with spears and swords. It was a sight like no other I have seen; upon the eve of the battle, the biting chill still in the air, there was a fog above the battlefield from the warm blood that have flowed across the plain from tens of thousands of dead soldiers.

As the Pecheneg khan, whose name I still do not know, fell dead upon the ground, slain by a Magyar arrow, the remaining troops surrendered before the superior might of the three armies. They agreed to lay down their weapons, be baptised by the priests in the Christian retinues, and serve as soldiers under the Magyar king. Soon, the remaining armies in the land did the same, which spelled the end to the Khanate.
