The northumbrian revolt
The Byzantine scholar in the north, Androcles of Trebizond, whom after the war in Scania traveled east to the islands of Britannia. Here, he recounted as King William II fought against the saxons in the provinces of Mercia and Northumbria.
"The realm of Britannia, once a jewel seized in Gaius Julius Caesar's campaign in Gallia, is now a bleak and desolate place. The houses here, even many of the castles, are made from wood, and the people dress in roughly tanned turs upon their bleak skins. However, they are hardy warriors, shown as the Norman king sent all his troops to suppress the Earls Edwin and Morcar, who had risen to arms against him and his foreign rule over the islands. A man called Edgar the Ætheling, claimed to be the last successor of the Saxon throne, now housing king Guillaume le Conquérant, assisted in the rebellion, who later was crushed as the mass of troops invaded the provinces of Mercia and Northumbria.
Although the rebels got as far as to the northern city of York, whom my translator calims to be a magnificient city of stone spires and broad alleys, and besieged it for a while, they tell me that their ability was broken by the stalwart defenders of the city, and that the final counterattack was delivered now. The earls were captured and broken on wheels, left out in the open to ward off any further attempts of rebellion. Edgar the Ætheling thus escaped and took refuge in the north, in the realm of Malcolm III.
Alas, for the king was unwise to send all of his troops to the north in a time of such instability, and as the rebels in the north were crushed by his merciless will, unrest among the saxon population in the south rose again and resulted in riots in the city of Londinium, where granaries and bakers' shops were pillaged and the common order were much disrupted. Even though as the muncinipal guard had suppressed much of the riots and put out the fires in the city before it took turn for the more grave, the streets of the capital allegedly look as if an enemy had laid siege to it.
